Daylesford Naturalis is a field recording project documenting the sounds of nature at different sites of the Wombat Forest around Daylesford, in Dja Dja Wurrung Country, Australia, during the 4th state-wide Covid-19 lockdown in 2021. The town of Daylesford is known for its mineral springs, the local lake and the forest that surrounds it. The sounds were recorded by Daylesford resident Dr Martin K. Koszolko - a music producer, sound artist and academic known for his creative work under the KOshowKO, Philosophy Of Sound and iubar project monikers. The recordings took place at 4 sites around Daylesford between May 30 and June 3, 2021 during a lockdown, where most people were restricted to only leaving their houses within a 5km radius. These recordings capture the sounds of many native birds, forests, creeks, and the Sailor’s Falls waterfall. Track titles reflect the locations and recording dates. Nature is presented mostly undisturbed, although sometimes there is no escaping from civilisation and occasionally you can also hear a distant rumble of vehicle engines. Among the tranquil settings, you can also hear some more dramatic sounds, such as loud Cockatoo voices and the rumbling sound of a large branch falling off from a very tall eucalyptus tree (as in track 3 at the 5.21 mark). I was directly under the tree when it happened, looking in a different direction and with my headphones on. While I could hear the rumbling sound of the falling branch, I couldn't immediately position where it was coming from and only when the branch was already on its way down, I noticed how large it was. Nowy’ means a ‘new one’ in Polish and this single is a celebration of kids’ voices and their approach to novelty. Those untrained voices are great at expressing the joy of discovering new things. Novelty is frequent in kids’ lives and kids are great at being fully absorbed in this newness. This release is a fruit of remote music collaboration between musicians who had no face-to-face contact and were located on 2 continents and in 4 countries. The collaborative process took place in ‘the cloud’ with the use of the Blend platform which facilitated the remixing and exchanges of musical ideas. Participants included Monochrome Echo from England, Brended James from Australia and Aammiioo from Croatia. Included is also a remix created by iubar’s Martin K under his KOshowKO moniker. While the original guitar, field recordings and synth driven piece has been re-imaged quite differently by each of the collaborators, the recordings of kids voices (captured by Martin K in Australia and New Zealand) and guitar drones (recorded by Jarek B in Poland) provide a common sonic denominator to all of the tracks on offer. The KOshowKO remix is a guitar riff driven and catchy affair with a strong electro element. Brenden James’ remix takes the listener on an evocative tropical electro-rock journey while Monochrome Echo explores the mesmerising jazzy-ambient and post-rock ground. Aammiioo closes the release with an expansive and groovy ambient remix.

KOshowKO

This release celebrates 15 years since the creation of ‘Promise’ – a track that became quite significant for KOshowKO. It became the first KOshowKO track remixed by another artist, as well as the first single and also a track to which a first ‘proper’ KOshowKO music video was made. The PDF version of the booklet is added as a bonus to each download. Printed copies (now sold out) were also available from our Merch section at the time of the release.
