Rafael Flores, spanish composer, sound and video artist. His whole work is milestone of experimental music and sound exploration, he produces audio/videoworks in a very much personal way too hard to define. Musician from Santiago de Chile (1979). My work focuses on the use of different sound sources, for the creation of pieces in real time or improvisation. The exploration of sound materials in this improvisational context is my main interest due to the inherent limitations and possibilities of this dynamic, such as (to name a few) the ideas of control and error, stability and instability, spontaneity vs. planning, decision-making and aesthetic idealization in space and time using selected sound materials. Second album in this series of improvisations using different friction techniques on elastic materials. In the process of recording the music for Zoology, we noticed how the pieces sounded like imaginary animals, and the sounds that they would make in different environments. Originally released on the con-v label (Madrid) in 2004, "Okraina" was constructed from field recordings made in December 2003 while on tour in Russia and Ukraine. Gas heated kitchen pipes, men sleeping in a train compartment, passing trains, light bulbs, soviet refrigerators, train toilets are the sources. The sounds where minimally mixed and processed, and the stranger sounds are more a result of strategic microphone placement and the lofi microcassette recorder than software processing.
